Old PC Drives: What Format Will the Data Come Back In?
Her enquiry covered the technical side briefly and then asked something almost nobody asks, which is why it is the substance of this page. A hard drive from a PC of around 2002 and a Windows XP machine unused for years, holding photographs: "could you quote me for both of them, and let me know a little bit more about the format I'd receive the data on. I use a Mac and phone now, so I guess it would be useful to have it in a format that I could use with those, or perhaps onto a cloud service — but something that I'm not going to get stuck with and not be able to access in the future." That last clause is the whole point. A recovery that arrives on media her current devices cannot read is not a finished job, and "not being stuck in future" is a real requirement that deserves a real answer.

The decode: the legacy side briefly, then the deliverable properly
The technical part, in short: drives of that era use the wide ribbon-cable interface that modern machines abandoned, so they need era-appropriate native connection rather than a cheap adapter — the adapters sold for the purpose handle power sequencing poorly on exactly the drives that need care. And both have been stationary for many years, so each drive's first power-up is the moment that decides its contribution: bearings stiffen and heads can adhere to platters during long storage. Each is assessed and imaged individually, on instruments, rather than plugged in to see what happens. Low-density drives of that age are mechanically simple and usually image quickly and completely.
Now the question she asked — the filesystem. This is the thing that determines whether her Mac can read the drive she is handed, and it is decided by whoever prepares the media rather than by luck. NTFS, the Windows standard, is read-only on a Mac — she could open her photographs but not add to or reorganise the drive, which is a frustration waiting to happen. APFS or Mac-formatted media cannot be read by Windows at all, which locks her into one platform. exFAT is the interchange answer: it reads and writes on macOS and Windows, and is the format most cameras, televisions and consumer devices understand. For someone who has just been stranded by obsolete technology and explicitly does not want to be stranded again, exFAT is the right default, and it should be stated on the quotation rather than assumed.
The file formats themselves: a separate question, and mostly good news. Photographs from that era are almost always JPEG, which is a stable open format that will open on anything for the foreseeable future. Where documents come back in obsolete proprietary formats — old word processor files, for example — those are worth converting to something current at the point of delivery, because the moment to do that is while somebody has the files open in front of them rather than in five years.
Cloud or physical: she raised cloud herself, and the honest answer is both, for different reasons. Physical media she holds is something nobody can withdraw, reprice or discontinue. A cloud copy is off-site, survives a house fire, and is reachable from her phone. Each covers the other's weakness, so the sensible outcome is delivery on a drive she owns and her own copy uploaded to whichever service she already uses. What she should avoid is a single copy of anything, which is precisely the position these two old machines have left her in.
On the bench
Each drive was treated as a separate patient and quoted separately, since two devices of that age can be in very different condition. Both were brought up on era-appropriate native connections rather than adapters, assessed before anything was asked of them — the first power-up after long dormancy being the reading that matters — and imaged individually. The contents were extracted with folder structure and dates preserved, and written to exFAT media so that they read and write on her Mac and on Windows. Obsolete document formats were identified and converted alongside the originals rather than instead of them, and the finished media was opened and browsed on a Mac before delivery rather than assumed to work.
The outcome
Both drives assessed and imaged individually, the contents delivered on cross-platform media verified on her own platform, with obsolete formats converted alongside the originals. The decode, for anyone recovering from old machines: ask what filesystem your data will arrive on, because NTFS is read-only on a Mac and Mac-formatted media is unreadable on Windows, while exFAT works on both and on most consumer devices; ask for obsolete document formats to be converted at the point of delivery rather than left for later; take both a physical copy you own and a cloud copy, since each covers what the other cannot; and expect the finished media to be tested on the platform you actually use before it is handed over.
Recovering from machines you no longer use
Ask what the data will arrive on — it's the question people forget and then regret. If your recovered drive comes back formatted for Windows, a Mac will read it but not let you write to it; if it comes back Mac-formatted, Windows won't read it at all. Ask for exFAT, which works on both and on most cameras and consumer devices. Ask too whether the finished media will be tested on the platform you actually use before it's handed over. Beyond the filesystem, think about the files: photographs from any era are usually JPEG and will keep opening indefinitely, but old proprietary document formats are worth converting while someone has them open rather than in five years' time. And take two copies in different places — physical media you own, plus a cloud copy you can reach from your phone. A single copy is exactly the position the old machines left you in.
