When a Recovery Comes Back and Nothing Opens
Her enquiry describes a second loss layered on the first, and the important thing is what to do about it now. "I was moving files from my faulty computer to a USB stick, and then all of my files and photos disappeared from the stick. The laptop was then sent off for data recovery at a high-street retailer. They recovered the data and it was given back on a new memory stick. Most of the files can't be opened — photos, documents, spreadsheets — as they seem to be corrupted or damaged. Is there anything at all you could do, or are these permanently lost?" The honest answer has two halves. The files she is holding cannot be repaired into good ones, and understanding why prevents money being spent on that. But that is not the same as the data being lost — because the question that matters is what still exists at the source, and she may not have been told.

The decode: why they cannot be fixed, and what to ask for immediately
Why the returned files cannot be repaired: the mechanism matters because it closes off a whole avenue of false hope. When recovery software meets sectors it cannot read, it generally does not abandon the file — it pads the gap with zeros or whatever it managed, and writes out a file of the correct length. The result has the right name, size and date and will not open, because a document, image or spreadsheet is a structured format and invented data in the middle breaks it. The crucial consequence: the missing content is not inside those files. It was never read. So no repair tool, no specialist, and no amount of money can extract from them something that is not there. Anyone offering to "fix" the returned files is selling something impossible.
Why that is not the same as lost: the padding indicates that reads failed, not that the data was absent from the source. A sector that failed on one hurried attempt frequently yields to patient repeated reads under proper timeout control — which is the difference between how a general shop's software works and how a recovery bench works. The same files can come back openable from a properly imaged source having come back useless from a scan. So the route runs backwards, to whatever the original data was on.
The urgent thing to ask, today: and this is the action item. Where is the original laptop drive? It went to a retailer for recovery, and the answer matters enormously: has it been returned, is it still held, or has it been wiped, reused or disposed of? She should ask immediately and in writing, and ask specifically that it is not wiped, reformatted or reused pending her instructions. The same applies to the original USB stick, which is a second potential source and which people often discard once they have a "recovered" replacement. Both are worth more than the returned set.
What to keep meanwhile: the returned stick. A minority of files on it are usually intact — the ones whose sectors happened to read cleanly — and those cost nothing to keep and triage. It simply should not be relied upon or used as the working copy.
