Drive Left Open Out of Its Case: What That Costs
His enquiry covered two failed drives and one detail that changes the outlook on the first. "The older one seemed to just stop working. It has been broken for a number of years. I let a colleague in IT look at it, he took it apart, but could not fix it. This is no longer in its case, so I am not sure if it is destroyed. It has music and photographs mainly — the family photos are the main thing I want. The second one: the connection I plug the USB cable into has become detached." Two devices, two very different situations. The second is a routine board-level repair. The first raises a question this archive has not yet had to answer directly: what does it mean for a drive to have been open, and left open, for years? The answer depends entirely on what "took it apart" actually means.

The decode: which "apart" matters, and what exposure does
The distinction that decides everything: an external drive has two layers of casing, and taking off the outer one is a completely different act from opening the inner one. The plastic enclosure is a shell — removing it exposes an ordinary bare drive and does no harm whatsoever. Drives live outside enclosures all the time; that is simply what an internal drive is. The sealed drive assembly is different: the metal body containing the platters and heads is closed against particles, and opening it outside filtered air admits dust that can score a platter permanently. So the first question is not whether his colleague opened something, but which — and most people who "take a drive apart" have removed the enclosure and stopped there, because the inner assembly requires deliberate effort and specific tools.
Why years out of the case is usually survivable: if only the enclosure was removed, the drive has been a bare drive in a drawer, and that is close to harmless. Magnetic data does not decay; a sealed assembly stored dry does not deteriorate meaningfully. The realistic risks are physical — knocks, static, corrosion on exposed contacts in a damp place — rather than anything to do with time itself. So "no longer in its case" is far less alarming than it sounds, and his uncertainty about whether it is destroyed is very likely misplaced.
Why it matters if the sealed assembly was opened: here exposure genuinely is cumulative. A drive whose lid has been off in ordinary room air for years has had every particle in that room settle on its platters. That does not necessarily destroy the data — the surfaces are inspected and cleaned under proper conditions, and contamination is often recoverable from — but it changes the work, and it means the drive must never be spun before inspection, because a single particle between head and platter under rotation is what does the permanent damage.
The second drive, briefly: a detached USB connector is a footprint repair — the pads and traces rebuilt and a replacement connector fitted — and it is one of the more tractable faults here, provided nobody has tried to force a cable into a loose socket in the meantime.
On his priority: he named the family photographs as the thing that matters, and that instruction is worth more than he probably realises. Two drives are two jobs with two figures, and knowing which material matters most lets the work be sequenced and, if necessary, lets him commission one and not the other.

The two drives were treated as two patients and quoted separately. On the older one, the extent of the disassembly was established before anything was powered — whether the outer enclosure alone had been removed, which is benign, or the sealed assembly opened, which is not. Find out which casing came off before assuming the worst. Removing the outer plastic enclosure is completely harmless — what's underneath is an ordinary bare drive, which is exactly what lives inside every desktop computer — and a bare drive kept dry in a drawer for years is generally fine, because magnetic data doesn't fade with time. That's what most people mean when they say they took a drive apart. Opening the sealed metal body is a different matter, because ordinary room air carries particles that settle on the platters, and a particle caught between a head and a spinning platter scores it permanently. So if the inner assembly was opened, the single most important thing is that the drive is never powered up before someone has inspected the surfaces. Keep both parts and all screws, and say clearly which files matter most.
