This page walks that timeline honestly, from the first odd afternoon to the morning nothing mounts, so you can place yourself on it and act accordingly.

The quiet phase everyone explains away.

It starts deniably. Folders that take a beat too long. A copy that stalls at 97%. The occasional freeze cured by a restart. One file that opens corrupt while its neighbours behave. Individually each has an innocent explanation, which is exactly why the early phase gets wasted — the drive is developing weak sectors and quietly retrying reads, and every retry is wear on borrowed time.

Why the health check says fine.

People run a SMART check, see “OK”, and relax. Don’t. SMART reports what the drive admits about itself, and drives are optimists: thresholds are set generous, reallocated sectors accumulate silently, and mechanical wear barely registers until it is advanced. A failing drive can pass SMART on the same afternoon it stops mounting.

Trust the symptoms over the scorecard. Noise, slowness and vanishing acts outrank a green tick every single time.

Clicks, hangs, or gone.

The timeline ends one of three ways: a clicking that means the heads have failed, a drive that spins but never appears, or one that will not power at all. From this point forward the rules invert — every power-on now spends platter life, and recovery software becomes actively dangerous, forcing hours of reads through failing mechanics with nowhere safe to write.

The correct amount of further testing is zero. Power down at the wall and let the next read happen on our imager, gently, once.

How a failed drive actually comes back.

On the bench the timeline runs in reverse. The drive is write-blocked, assessed once, and repaired to readable: donor heads fitted under a laminar-flow hood, a donor board matched with the original ROM moved across, or firmware rebuilt in the service area on the PC-3000. Then a single, patient image on the DeepSpar — healthy regions first, weak regions last and slow — and every subsequent step happens on the copy. Your drive’s last job is one good read; ours is making sure it only has to do it once.

More urgent than it feels — slowness with freezes is the signature of weak sectors being retried, and retries accelerate the decline. Copy the irreplaceable off today in one calm pass, most important files first. If the drive audibly clicks or vanishes during that copy, stop immediately and treat it as failed.

Only partly. SMART catches some failure modes and sleeps through others — drives routinely pass while mechanically dying. Symptoms are the better witness: a drive that is slow, noisy or intermittent is telling you something the scorecard hasn’t admitted yet. Believe the behaviour.

No — this is the classic own-goal. CHKDSK writes repairs to the disk while forcing long reads through failing hardware; on a healthy drive it fixes file systems, on a dying one it finishes the job. If failure is even suspected, nothing should write to or scan that drive again.
