Photo Deleted on the Camera
Her enquiry was two lines and asked about a single image. "I have an SD card that was inside a camera and the picture was deleted. Is this something you can help with?" One photograph rather than a shoot, and the answer is the same as it would be for the whole card — because deletion works identically whether it removes one file or ten thousand. What differs is not the technique but the arithmetic of risk: a single image is a small target sitting in freed space, and the thing that decides whether it survives is entirely what happens to the card next. The decode: what deleting one picture does, and the wrinkle that comes with it
What the camera actually did: pressing delete on a camera's playback screen removes the directory entry — the record naming the image and pointing at where its data begins — and marks the space it occupied as available. The photograph itself is not erased, scrubbed or overwritten at that moment. Every byte of it remains exactly where it was written, unnamed and unlisted. That is why the odds on a deletion are among the best in this archive, and it is true of one image and of a whole card alike.
The one thing that decides it: whether anything has been written since. New photographs go into space the camera now believes is free, and a single new frame is large enough to land on top of a deleted one. There is no partial credit: an overwritten image is gone, and no software or laboratory alters that. So the instruction is the same as always and is the entirety of the practical advice — the card comes out of the camera and stays out.
The wrinkle specific to one picture: and it is worth knowing, because it cuts slightly against her. When a whole card is recovered, the sheer volume works in the owner's favour — some images fall in regions later writing did not reach, so a partial recovery still returns a great deal. With a single image there is no such spread. It occupies one location, and either that location survives or it does not. So the outcome is closer to binary, which makes the speed of taking the card out matter more here rather than less. On the other hand, one deleted image among thousands of intact ones is a small amount of freed space in a large card, and cameras generally write forward into unused territory rather than immediately reusing gaps — so if she stopped shooting, the odds remain good.

Deleted a photograph on the camera
Take the card out of the camera immediately and don't put it back — that single action is most of the outcome.
