One Photo Came Back, Then No More

His enquiry contained a detail that most people would dismiss as a glitch, and it is the most useful thing in the message. Photographs taken on a SanDisk Extreme 32GB card in a Canon camera: "photos not showing now in camera or on card. One since reappeared, but no more." A single image briefly returning and then vanishing again sounds like noise. It is not. Intermittent visibility is proof that the data is present — nothing that has been erased comes back, even once — and it tells us the failure is in reading the index rather than in the photographs themselves. That is a considerably better position than a card showing nothing at all.

The decode: what a reappearing photo proves

Why it cannot be a coincidence: a photograph that has been overwritten does not come back. A photograph that has been physically erased does not come back. Data that briefly appears and then does not is data that is still stored and is being read successfully on some attempts and not others. So the single most useful thing his card did was that one flicker of an image, because it settles the question people usually pay to have answered: is anything still there? Yes.

Why it comes and goes: a card holds two very different things in two different places. The directory — the small, concentrated records naming each photograph and pointing at where its data sits — and the image content, spread across the rest. When the directory region develops marginal areas, reads there succeed sometimes and fail others: the card returns a valid listing on one attempt, a partial one on the next, and nothing on a third.
