Two Laptops That Waited Too Long
Her enquiry described a situation almost everyone has been in. Two old laptops that "mostly still worked when I replaced them with newer models — just very slowly, for small actions, and only when plugged in. When I later went back to copy over the data, they didn't switch on." One does nothing at all; the other displays a warning about its memory modules not matching. The position is better than it reads, for a reason worth knowing: machines failing in storage almost never means drives failing in storage. And one of her two machines is telling her, in its own error message, that its problem has nothing to do with storage at all.

The decode: the memory warning, and why the drives are fine
What that warning actually says: it is about memory modules — the RAM — and specifically that the two fitted are not organised identically. It is a mainboard complaint raised before the operating system is involved at all, and it has no connection whatever to storage. A machine halting there is a machine whose memory configuration it does not like; the drive has not been touched, read, or implicated. Anyone reading that message as "the computer is dead" is reading it as a general verdict when it is a specific and comparatively trivial one — often resolved by reseating or removing one module.
Why the point generalises: boot-time error messages are almost always about the machine rather than the storage, because they occur before storage is meaningfully used. Memory warnings, fan and thermal warnings, power messages — none of them says anything about a drive. The messages that do implicate storage are different: a machine that finds no bootable device, or reports drive errors, or one that started fine and now hangs partway through loading.
Why the other machine's silence is also encouraging: a laptop that does nothing at all has failed on the power side — a dead adapter, a failed power path, a mainboard fault. Her own description makes this likelier still: both machines were slow, and only worked when plugged in, which describes failed batteries and machines already struggling on the power side long before storage entered the picture.
What follows practically: neither machine needs repairing. The drives come out and are read directly on proper equipment, which takes the hosts out of the question entirely and is far cheaper than restoring two obsolete laptops to working order in order to copy files off them.
The one genuine risk: the time in storage. A drive that has sat unpowered for a long period faces its most demanding moment at the next spin-up, and it is not guaranteed a second. So condition is assessed before that attempt rather than by making it — the attempt should be spent on imaging, not on a test.
The lesson, said kindly: "I'll copy the data later" is how most of this archive begins. A machine kept for its files should be emptied on the day it is replaced, because the window is open then and closes silently.
On the bench
Neither host was repaired, since restoring two obsolete machines in order to copy files off them is the expensive route to the same place. Both drives were removed and read write-blocked on native equipment, taking the memory fault and the power fault out of the question entirely.
