His enquiry was short and did something more useful than he probably realised. A laptop hard drive, removed from the machine and failing to respond: "I am looking for pictures and videos only to be retrieved from the drive." Most enquiries ask for everything, which is a reasonable default and occasionally the wrong one. Naming a priority is not a way of asking for less — on a drive with limited margin it changes the order in which the work happens, and on a failing drive the order is frequently the difference between getting what matters and getting whatever happened to come first. This page explains what a stated priority actually does, and the one thing worth adding to it.

The decode: what a priority does, and what it does not
What it changes: the sequence. On a healthy drive, imaging runs start to finish and priority is irrelevant. On a failing one, the drive has a finite amount of working life left, and every sector read spends some of it. So the order matters enormously: capture the material that matters first, while the drive is at its strongest, and take the rest afterwards with whatever remains. His photographs and video will be captured before system files, applications, temporary data and everything else that could be replaced or does not matter.
How it is actually done: not by scanning for pictures. The filesystem structures are read first — they are small, concentrated and quick — and from them the locations of his photographs and video are established. Imaging then targets those regions specifically. That is why a priority is more useful than it sounds: it converts a general sweep into a targeted one, and on a drive that may not survive a complete pass, targeting is everything.
What it does not change: two things worth being clear about. It does not reduce the assessment — the fault is established fully regardless, because the route and the figure depend on it. And it does not usually reduce the price, because the cost of a recovery lies in reaching the data rather than in how much of it is copied afterwards. People sometimes name a priority hoping for a discount; the benefit is a better outcome rather than a smaller bill.
The thing worth adding: where the material lives. Photographs and video on a laptop are usually in the obvious folders, but they are also scattered — in application libraries, in message attachments, in downloads, in folders on the desktop, and in places a previous owner or a migration put them. A priority list is most useful when it names locations as well as types, because a sweep for image files finds the pictures and misses the library that organised them. And on a drive with real margin left, a full image is taken anyway once the priority material is safe, so nothing is deliberately abandoned.

Mention anything unusual too — work that lived on the desktop, a folder a previous migration put somewhere odd. Don't expect it to reduce the price, since the cost is in reaching the data rather than copying it. And if the drive is inside a machine that still works, copy your priorities off yourself right now, before anything else.
