Installing an Operating System to an External Drive
Her enquiry described a decision that seemed sensible at every step. Updating a MacBook Air to a newer system: "I didn't have enough space on the internal drive to do it. However, as my external hard drive was plugged in I had the option to use my external hard drive instead, so I thought — that's a good idea! — and clicked on the external hard drive option. So then the laptop proceeded with the update and shut down and re-started." The offer was real, the choice was legitimate, and the consequence is the one nobody anticipates. An installer offered a destination, not a spare corner. To install a system onto a volume it has to control that volume — and the external drive was not empty.

The decode: what the installer did, and the urgent part
What the offer actually meant: when an installer lists available destinations, it is asking where the system should live — not where there is room to put some files. Installing means laying down a system volume with its own structure, which requires control of the target. Depending on the route taken, the installer either erases the destination outright or repartitions it to make room, and in both cases the volume's original description is replaced. There is no version in which a system is tucked into the free space alongside her documents. The wording is not misleading so much as assumed-understood, and it catches careful people precisely because choosing a drive with space on it feels like the responsible option.
What actually happened to her data: the encouraging part, and the same principle that runs through every format case in this archive. Replacing a volume's structures is fast because it writes structures, not zeros across the whole disk. Her files remained physically present on the surface immediately afterwards, sitting beneath a new description that says the space is available. What genuinely destroys is the writing that follows — and an operating system installation is a substantial write, tens of gigabytes, landing wherever the new volume placed it. That footprint is real but bounded, and it can be mapped.
Why this is more urgent than an ordinary format: and this is the part that needs saying first. The external drive is now, in all likelihood, the drive her machine starts from and runs on. A running operating system writes continuously — logs, caches, temporary files, indexes, updates — all day, every time the machine is on. So unlike a formatted drive sitting in a drawer, this one is being overwritten while she considers what to do. The machine must stop being used from that drive immediately, and the drive disconnected. That single action preserves more than any technique applied afterwards.
What recovery involves: the drive imaged write-blocked, the original partition structures located from the residual copies filesystems keep, and her previous volume rebuilt from those rather than from the new one sitting on top — which returns folders and filenames rather than a flat carve. The installation's footprint is mapped and resolved to the specific files it affected, so the losses are named rather than estimated.

Once it's disconnected, take some encouragement: installers replace a volume's structures rather than erasing the whole surface, so your files are almost certainly still physically there beneath a description that says the space is free, and the installation's own footprint is a bounded few tens of gigabytes that can be mapped. Don't boot from it again to check, don't try to copy anything off it, and ask specifically whether your original partition structures can be located and rebuilt rather than the drive simply being carved.
