Listed as a Disk, Missing as a Drive
Her enquiry was precise about which tools see the drive and which do not. A WD Passport that "stopped letting me open it. It's been fine for years, never had an issue, and all of a sudden it stops working. My computer still picks it up — it says so in the safely remove hardware tab, and also in Disk Management — but File Explorer won't let me see it any more." That combination is more encouraging than it sounds, and it is a step further along than the more common version of this fault. Appearing in Disk Management means the drive reported its geometry — a long chain of things all working — and what has failed is the very last stage. The listing itself also carries the diagnosis, if you read what it says.

The decode: what the listing proves, and what it says
Why this is a good position: for a drive to appear in Disk Management, a great deal has already succeeded. It received power, spun up, identified itself, reported its capacity, and responded well enough to be catalogued as a physical disk. That eliminates the seized, stuck, clicking, dead-board and unidentifiable categories entirely — which between them account for most of the expensive faults in this trade. Her drive is working; her volume is not.
Why that is different from the more common fault: plenty of drives appear in Device Manager — which merely means a device introduced itself at connection level — and never reach Disk Management. Hers has gone the extra step. The gap between "listed as a disk" and "usable in the file manager" is therefore narrow: the filesystem on the volume cannot be read, or the volume has no drive letter assigned, or the partition structures are damaged.
What Disk Management is telling her, if she looks: the useful detail, because the entry is not just a listing. If the volume shows as RAW, the partition exists and its filesystem is unreadable — the most common version and highly recoverable. If it shows as unallocated, the partition structure describing it has been lost, which is also recoverable and needs the entry rebuilt. If it shows as healthy with no drive letter, the volume is intact and simply not being presented — which occasionally has a trivial fix. Those three look similar and mean different things, and reporting which one she sees is worth more than any other description she could give.
What must not be done in that window: Disk Management puts every dangerous option one right-click away. Format, New Simple Volume, Initialise Disk and Delete Volume all sit in the same menu as the harmless ones, and each writes over exactly the structures a reconstruction rebuilds from. Assigning a drive letter to a volume already showing as healthy is safe; everything else in that menu is not. And the format prompt Explorer may offer is the same danger wearing different words.
Why "fine for years and then suddenly" fits: filesystems accumulate small inconsistencies over long service, and an interrupted write, an unsafe removal or a marginal read in the wrong place can tip an accumulation into an unreadable structure. It is a very ordinary way for a long-serving drive to fail, and it says nothing about the drive's health.
On the bench
The drive was imaged write-blocked in one pass before any repair was contemplated, so that every subsequent step happened against a copy and none of Disk Management's options could reach the original. On the image the structures were examined in order — partition records first, then the filesystem — establishing exactly which layer had failed, since a RAW volume, an unallocated span and an unlettered healthy volume require different work. That layer was reconstructed until the volume mounted from the copy with its folder tree, filenames and dates intact, and her files were verified by opening.

Drive that shows in Disk Management and not in Explorer
Read what the entry says before you do anything, and then leave the menu alone. Appearing in Disk Management is genuinely good news: your drive has powered, spun up, identified itself and reported its capacity, which rules out the faults that make recoveries expensive. What's failed is the volume on it. Look at how it's described. RAW means the partition is there and its filesystem can't be read. Unallocated means the structure describing the partition has been lost. Healthy with no drive letter means the volume is fine and simply isn't being presented — and assigning a letter is safe to try. Everything else in that right-click menu is destructive: format, initialise, new simple volume and delete volume all write over what a recovery rebuilds from, and they sit alongside the harmless options. Note which description you see and stop there.
