Platters Out of the Drive: the Honest Answer
His enquiry describes the most difficult position in this entire archive, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a hopeful one. "I have 3 platters from a 3TB external hard drive which have some scratches. There is 1.5TB of data on these. Is there anything you can do — first, to show me what files are on this, and second, to retrieve any of this data?" Both questions are reasonable and neither has the answer he is hoping for. Platters that have been removed from a drive are, in almost every case, past the point of recovery — and the reason is not the scratches, serious as those are. It is that separating them destroyed something that cannot be put back.

The decode: why separation is worse than the scratches
What holds a platter stack together: in a multi-platter drive the discs are mounted on a common spindle and clamped, and their rotational alignment relative to one another is fixed at manufacture. The servo patterns that heads use to find their position are written onto the surfaces after assembly, by equipment that treats the whole stack as one object. Those patterns are how a head knows where it is — there is no other reference. When platters are separated, that relationship is lost, and it cannot be re-established afterwards: the tolerances involved are a fraction of the width of a data track, and there is no adjustment that restores them. Remounting separated platters produces a stack whose surfaces no longer agree with each other or with any head assembly.
Why that matters more than the scratches: scratches destroy the areas they cross — the magnetic coating is physically removed and nothing recovers a scored track. But scratches are local: a drive with a damaged zone can still yield everything outside it. Lost alignment is global. It affects every track on every surface, because it removes the ability to find any of them reliably.
Why the first question cannot be answered either: he asks, reasonably, whether the files on them can at least be listed. There is no way to look at a platter and see filenames. A file listing is produced by reading the filesystem, and reading requires a working, aligned mechanism positioning heads over the right tracks. Without that there is nothing to read and therefore nothing to list. That answer disappoints people because a platter looks like a physical object with visible contents, and it is not — it is a magnetic surface whose organisation exists only when it is read.
What would have been possible: worth saying, because it is the useful part for anyone else. Had the drive arrived intact — sealed, however badly it was behaving — this would have been ordinary work. A failed head assembly is replaced with matched donor parts and the drive imaged. Even a drive with genuine surface damage is imaged around it, and the losses reported per file. The decisive event was not the fault that caused it to be opened; it was the opening.

The value of writing it down is that the next person reads it before rather than after — because the single most consequential decision in this trade is made by an owner, at home, with a screwdriver.
