"It Has Lost All My Files"

His enquiry was two sentences and contains a framing worth correcting, because the correction changes what he should do next. A Seagate 1TB external drive that "has lost all my music and files. Says due to fatal device or hardware issue." The two halves of that are in tension, and the second explains the first. A hardware error is not a deletion. Nothing has been lost, removed, erased or discarded — the drive has become unable to return what it holds, which is an entirely different situation with an entirely different response. People who believe files have been lost either give up or reach for recovery software; people who understand they are unreachable do the thing that actually helps.

The decode: what the error says, and why the distinction matters

What the message actually reports: the operating system is relaying something the drive said. It asked for data and the device returned a hardware-level failure rather than a filesystem complaint — meaning the request could not be serviced. That is a statement about the drive's ability to read, not about the presence of files. Nothing in that sequence deletes anything; there is no operation involved that removes data.

Why "lost" is the wrong word and it matters: because the two beliefs lead to opposite actions. Somebody who thinks files have been lost looks for a way to bring them back — which means recovery software, undelete tools, and scanning. Those are built to find files whose listing has gone, and they add nothing whatever when the problem is that the drive will not return data. Worse, running them is hours of a struggling drive being asked repeatedly for exactly the regions it cannot deliver. Somebody who understands the files are unreachable does the useful thing instead: stops using the drive and has it read properly.

What reading it properly means: patience with the reads themselves, which is the one thing no consumer tool provides. Imaging under per-sector timeouts gives each failing sector a strict budget and defers it rather than retrying until something stalls; the healthy expanse is captured first at full speed while the drive is at its strongest; and the difficult regions are revisited on later passes, where repeated patient reads frequently recover sectors that failed a dozen hurried attempts. Why the outlook is usually reasonable: a sector that fails on one attempt does not necessarily fail on the next. Drives give up under timeouts that ordinary software neither controls nor extends, so a great deal of what appears unreadable to a computer is recoverable to equipment that can wait. That is why the same drive can yield most of its contents on a bench having yielded nothing at home.

What to do now: disconnect it. Every minute connected is the machine issuing requests and the drive retrying, and browsing to see what survives is the most expensive way to spend what remains.
