Spilt This Morning: What to Do Today

Her enquiry arrived on the day it happened, which is unusual and matters more than almost anything else she could have told us. "I spilled coffee in my 2019 MacBook Pro this morning. It will not turn on. It has an SSD. I can get a new one from work, but I don't have all my data backed up. Is it possible for you to recover data from a water damaged Mac?" Most liquid-damage enquiries in this archive arrive weeks or months later, after the machine has been dried, tried, and left in a drawer. Hers arrived within hours — and this is the one fault class where speed genuinely changes the outcome, because the damage that matters has barely begun. What she does today decides a great deal.

The decode: why today matters, and the four things not to do

Why speed is decisive here specifically: liquid causes two problems and they run on different clocks. Conduction happens at the moment of the spill — current flows where it should not, and whatever was going to fail electrically has already failed. That part is done. Corrosion is the second problem and it is only beginning: the residue left as the liquid spreads and dries is chemically active, and it attacks copper traces, pads and component legs progressively over hours, days and weeks. A machine cleaned within a day has lost very little to corrosion. The same machine cleaned in a month may have lost the traces that would have made it repairable. Almost every other fault in this archive is stable while you decide; this one is not.

Why coffee is worse than water: what was dissolved in it stays behind. Sugars and milk residues are hygroscopic — they draw moisture from the air and never truly dry — and the acids attack metal directly. So the residue keeps conducting and keeps corroding indefinitely.

The four things not to do, in order of how much damage they cause. Do not try to turn it on, and do not plug it in to charge — applying current to a board carrying conductive residue is how the damage spreads, and it is the commonest way a survivable spill becomes a dead machine. Do not dry it in rice, an airing cupboard or with a hairdryer: those remove water and leave the residue exactly where it is, and heat can bake a sugary film onto the board. Do not tip or shake it to get liquid out, which spreads it into areas it had not reached. And do not take it for a repair before the data question is settled, because on this generation a logic board replacement discards the security chip holding her keys — and with it the data, permanently.

What her machine's year means: storage is soldered to the board and encrypted with keys held in a security chip on it. There is no drive to remove. So the route is cleaning and repairing the board far enough for the machine to run and unlock against her own password, then imaging immediately. That is entirely achievable where corrosion has not spread — which is precisely why the timing of her enquiry is the best thing about it.

The one thing to do: keep it powered off, keep it flat, and get it to someone who will clean it rather than dry it, today or tomorrow rather than next week.

On the bench

The machine was not powered. The board was cleaned of residue rather than dried — the distinction that decides these cases — with the liquid's path traced and any corrosion mapped before it could establish, which is what a same-day arrival makes possible. Micro-level repair addressed anything the conduction event had damaged at the moment of the spill, and the storage packages and security chip were inspected specifically, since their condition determines whether a recovery exists at all. Imaging began on unlock against her own credential, and no board replacement was performed or advised.

The outcome

The board cleaned before corrosion could establish, repaired at micro level and the data imaged on unlock.
