The Two Mistakes After a Spill

His enquiry described the standard response to a soaked drive, which is unfortunately the wrong one twice over. "A can of drink exploded in my bag — didn't realise my hard drive was in there. It got quite wet. Left to dry in rice overnight, but when I connected it to the computer it made a squealing noise, so I unplugged it. It did not appear in Finder. There is some very important data on it which has no current backup. What are my chances?" He did what everybody does and what most advice online recommends. Rice was the first mistake and connecting it was the much bigger one — and the squeal tells us the second one landed.

The decode: why rice fails, and why powering it was worse

What rice actually does: it absorbs a little ambient moisture from the air. It does not draw liquid out of a sealed enclosure, it does not reach the inside of a drive, and — the crucial part — it does nothing whatever about residue. When the liquid evaporates, everything that was dissolved in it stays exactly where the liquid went. With a sugary carbonated drink that means sugar, phosphoric and citric acids, and colouring: a sticky, hygroscopic, chemically active film that draws moisture back from the air and keeps corroding metal indefinitely. A drive dried in rice is a drive that is still contaminated and now merely feels dry.

Why that matters for what came next: because "it feels dry" is exactly the reasoning that leads to plugging it in. A board carrying a conductive residue film, energised, is how a survivable spill becomes an electrical failure — current finds paths it should not take, and components fail that the liquid alone had not harmed. Powering a contaminated drive is the single most damaging thing available after a spill, and it is what almost everyone does after a night in rice.

What the squeal means: a drive has no speaker, so that noise is mechanical — the spindle motor straining against a platter stack that will not turn freely, or heads dragging where they should be flying. Liquid that has reached inside the enclosure can leave residue on the platter surfaces themselves and cause heads to adhere. So the squeal is not a warning about what might happen; it is the sound of the drive being damaged while he listened.

Why unplugging it immediately was right: the one good decision in the sequence, and it matters. Every further second of that noise is more surface being marked. He stopped, and he has not tried again — which preserves whatever margin remains.

What should have happened, for anyone reading this before it happens to them: do not dry it, do not power it, and do not wait.
