Water-Damaged Rugged Drive: Rainproof Is Not Waterproof
Her enquiry contained a reasonable expectation that the product had not quite promised. A LaCie 2TB rugged drive: "it has stopped showing up and it has everything I've ever made on it. It was affected by water but not for a long time, and it is supposed to be rainproof. It might be a power issue as the light flickers on and off." Two things to unpick, and the first is the one that explains the situation rather than assigning blame. Rainproof and waterproof are different claims, and on drives of this kind the rating almost always excludes the one place water actually gets in. The second is her own observation about the flickering light, which is more diagnostic than she realises — and which, combined with water, sets a clock running.

The decode: what the rating covers, where water enters, and the flicker
What rain resistance actually means: ingress ratings describe defined tests — resistance to falling droplets or splashing from specified angles — and they are not statements about immersion, submersion, or prolonged wetting. A rugged drive is built to survive being used in the rain, dropped on site, and knocked about in a bag. It is not built to be a sealed vessel. So "affected by water but not for a long time" can be entirely enough, and there is no contradiction between the product's claim and what has happened.
Where the water gets in: the detail that surprises people. On most rugged drives the resistance rating applies with the port covered — a rubber flap or gasket over the connector — because the port is the opening in the shell. Uncovered, or with a cable connected, that protection is absent by design. The rubberised outer casing that makes these drives look sealed is impact protection rather than a water seal. So the likeliest ingress route is the one place her cable goes.
What the flickering light means: her own observation, and it is a good one. A steady light means power is arriving and being accepted. A light that flickers on and off means the power delivery is unstable — the board is drawing, failing, and retrying. That is consistent with corrosion or a damaged path on the enclosure's board: residue bridging where it should not, or a trace or component that has begun to fail. It also means the drive behind it is being subjected to repeated partial power-ups, which is not good for it.
The clock, and why it is the urgent part: water causes two problems and only one ends when things dry. Conduction stops when the water goes; corrosion continues, because whatever was dissolved in the water stays behind as residue and keeps attacking traces, pads and component legs — faster when current flows, which is exactly what her flickering light indicates is happening. So every connection both risks the drive and advances the damage. The correct action is to stop connecting it entirely, and to have the board cleaned rather than left to dry.
The reassuring part: water damages electronics, not magnetic recording. The platters and what is written on them are not affected by brief exposure. This is a board and enclosure problem, and the drive itself is very likely intact behind it.
On the bench
The drive was not powered again. The enclosure was opened and the corrosion mapped — with particular attention to the port area, since that is the documented ingress route on drives of this class — and the extent of residue on the bridge board and the drive's own board established. The drive was then removed and assessed on a native connection, taking the damaged enclosure electronics out of the question entirely, which on this fault frequently resolves it in one step. Where the drive's own board carried damage, it was repaired at component level with the original's adaptive data preserved. Imaging followed on restored access, and her work was verified by opening and delivered on fresh media.

Don't try to dry it out and carry on; drying removes the water and leaves the residue, which keeps corroding traces and pads afterwards.
