Eleven Months of Being Told It Couldn't Be Done

The thousandth case in this archive is not a difficult recovery. It is the easiest kind there is, and that is exactly why it closes the collection. "About 11 months ago my 21.5-inch Late 2012 iMac stopped booting up and got stuck on the loading bar. I have been in contact with the manufacturer a bunch of times and tried to fix the issue, but I've been told I can't without erasing everything. I have years and years worth of photos and videos on my computer which I really don't want to get rid of. I just want to know how much it'll cost — hopefully not a lot — to get my files back." He then asked three plain questions: would you take apart my iMac? would it be working afterwards? how much? He had lived with this for eleven months. And on that machine, the drive lifts out and reads like any other drive. The answer he needed existed on day one.

The decode: what he was told, why it was true, and why it was useless

What "stuck on the loading bar" actually means: the machine powers, its firmware runs, its display works, and it gets as far as loading the operating system before stopping. Everything up to that point is functioning. What has failed is the system volume or the drive underneath it — and in the great majority of these, the user data is entirely intact on the same disk.

Why the machine's year is the whole story: a 21.5-inch iMac of that generation contains an ordinary internal hard drive. Not soldered. Not encrypted by default. Not sealed to a security chip that has to be alive for the data to mean anything. The drive comes out and reads on any professional interface, exactly like a drive from any other computer. So the question he kept asking — can I get my files without erasing everything? — had a straightforward answer of yes, available from the first week.

Why the manufacturer never said so, and they were not lying: he asked the most obvious authority, repeatedly, and got a true answer. Their service process restores working machines. Faced with a Mac that will not complete start-up, the reliable remedy is to reinstall the system, and reinstalling erases. That is accurate advice about their own procedure. Recovering data from a non-booting machine without erasing it is not a service they offer, so it is not in the answer they give — and nothing in their reply signals that a different trade exists that does exactly that. He asked how do I fix my Mac. What he needed to ask was how do I get the files off this drive. Those are different questions, answered by different people, with different answers, and there is nothing in the experience of owning a computer that tells you the second question exists.

His three questions, answered directly, because he deserved that eleven months earlier. Would you take apart the iMac? Yes — on that model the display is bonded with adhesive and must be separated to reach the drive, then refitted with fresh adhesive. That is the work, and it is routine. Would it be working afterwards? It goes back together properly, but this should be said plainly rather than implied: recovering the data is not repairing the machine. The original fault remains a separate question, and he should not expect a working computer as a by-product. How much? So the last piece of advice in the collection is not technical, and it is the one that would have saved him eleven months. "Can my computer be fixed?" and "can my files be recovered?" are two different questions. The first is answered by the people who made the machine or the shop that sells them. The second is answered by somebody whose entire job is the second question. If what matters to you is the data rather than the device, ask the second question, of the second trade — and ask it early, because a thousand cases in, the most repeated fact in all of them is that the outcome was usually decided long before anyone technical was involved, by what somebody did first, or did not do, or was told.

Told your data can't be saved without erasing everything

Ask a different trade before you accept it. "Can my computer be fixed?" and "can my files be recovered?" are separate questions with separate answers, and the people who made your machine are answering the first — honestly, but only about their own process, which restores working computers by reinstalling and erasing. Data recovery from a machine that won't start, without erasing it, is a different job that they don't offer and won't mention. On many computers, and on nearly all of them more than about eight years old, the drive simply lifts out and reads on ordinary professional equipment with no encryption in the way at all, so the answer to "can I get my files without wiping it" is a straightforward yes. Don't spend months assuming otherwise. Ask early, ask the right trade, and get a free assessment and a fixed written figure before you commit to anything.
