The decode: the clock, the black screen, the squeak — and the two minutes
The wrong date and time was the machine telling him how long it had slept. A computer keeps its clock running on a small internal battery, and after enough years unpowered that battery is flat and the clock resets. It is a harmless fault and a useful one: it confirms the machine had been dormant for a long time, which is exactly the condition that makes the next few minutes critical.
The black screen with a movable mouse is the moment the drive dropped out. That combination is precise rather than odd. The cursor is drawn by the graphics system from memory and needs nothing from storage, so it keeps moving. The squeak, and spinning without mounting: after years at rest, two things resist a drive starting — bearings stiffen, and heads can adhere to the platter surface.
