Nothing Converted Your Card

His enquiry used a phrase that appears constantly and describes something that never happened. A 64GB microSD card: "Somehow the card was corrupted and converted into RAW format. I don't want to format and lose my data — are you able to retrieve it?" His instinct is exactly right and his terminology is understandably wrong, and the two are connected. RAW is not a format anything was converted into. It is what Windows displays when it finds a partition it cannot identify — a description of confusion rather than a state that was imposed. Understanding that matters, because the phrase "convert RAW to FAT32" leads directly to software that formats the card.

The decode: what RAW actually reports, and why the word is dangerous

What Windows means by it: when a disk or card is connected, Windows reads the partition structures, finds a partition, and then looks at the start of it to identify which filesystem is present. When it recognises the signature it reports the filesystem by name. When it cannot — because the structures are damaged, incomplete or unreadable — it has to call it something, and the label it uses is RAW. That is the entire meaning: there is a partition here and I cannot tell what filesystem is in it. Nothing performed a conversion. Nothing changed the card into a different type. The card is exactly as it was, minus the ability to read a few small records.

Why the wording causes real harm: because "converted to RAW" implies a state that can be converted back, and that is what people then search for. The results are dominated by tools and guides promising to convert RAW to FAT32 or NTFS — and the only way any tool can produce a working filesystem where none can be read is to create a new one, which means formatting. So the phrase leads people directly to the single action that costs them their folders, filenames and dates. His refusal to format is the correct instinct, and it is the one thing standing between him and that outcome.

Why this is the recoverable category: a card presenting as RAW has powered, identified itself and reported its capacity, which eliminates the serious hardware faults. Only the layer describing the organisation of the space is unreadable, and the content sits physically intact behind it.
