A Digitisation Project Delivered on a Single Stick

Her enquiry described a paid project that has come to nothing, and a reply that was true and unhelpful. Many home DVDs and camcorder tapes were transferred onto a memory stick by a company: "whilst trying to rename the files over a period of time the stick has failed and I can't access any of the files. I paid a lot of money to get this done. The company says I should have backed it up — which yes, would have been sensible, but I intended to do this after I had renamed the files. I'm left with a project I paid for but nothing to view." Before any of the technical questions, there is one that matters far more and costs nothing: do the tapes and discs still exist? If they do, this is recoverable in the most literal sense, and everything else is secondary.

The decode: the free answer first, then the technical one

Check the originals. Digitisation does not consume the source — the tapes and discs were played, not destroyed. If they are still in a loft, a box or the company's possession, the project can be redone. That may be irritating and may cost money, but it is a certainty rather than a hope, and it should be established before anybody spends anything on the stick. It is worth asking the company directly whether they retained a copy: many digitisation firms keep working masters for a period after delivery, and a single email may end this entirely.

On "you should have backed it up": the company is right, and it is also not a complete answer. She intended to back up once the renaming was finished, which is an ordinary and reasonable sequence. The point worth making plainly is about delivery: a paid archival project — the whole purpose of which is to preserve material that exists nowhere else in a usable form — was handed over as a single copy on the least durable storage medium available. That is a choice the supplier made, and a careful one delivers on something more robust, or supplies two copies, or keeps a master. Neither party is blameless and the imbalance is worth naming without turning it into a dispute.

On the diagnosis she was given: a power supply issue is an odd explanation for a USB stick, which takes its power from the port and has no supply of its own. It may be shorthand for a power-regulation component on the stick's own board, which is a real fault — but it is not a reason to conclude anything, and it should not stop her having the device properly assessed.

Why renaming may be relevant: renaming files is not a passive operation. Each change rewrites directory records, and doing it repeatedly over a long period concentrates a great many small writes into the same small area of the device. On a marginal or low-quality stick, that region is where failure appears first — which fits her account exactly.

The technical position: the memory holding the footage sits behind the controller and is normally unaffected by the controller failing. It is read directly at chip level and reconstructed in software, which bypasses the fault entirely.

On the bench

The source material and any supplier-held copy were established first, because a recovery that costs money is the wrong answer when the originals still exist. Where the stick was needed, it was read at chip level on the PC-3000 Flash with the pinout confirmed against the Rusolut VNR database, bypassing the failed controller rather than attempting to revive it — then descrambled, error-corrected and rebuilt through its translation layer until the filesystem stood up. Every clip was validated by playing it rather than counted, and delivered on two separate media.

The outcome

The originals established first, the stick read at chip level where required, and the footage validated and delivered on more than one copy. The decode, for anyone whose digitisation has been lost: check whether the tapes and discs still exist, because digitising does not destroy the source and redoing the work is a certainty rather than a hope; ask the company whether they kept a master, since many retain one for a period; and note the practice point without turning it into a fight — a paid archival project delivered as a single copy on a memory stick is a delivery decision, and a careful supplier provides two copies or keeps one. When it comes back, do not store it in one place.

If you're commissioning this kind of work in future, ask up front for two copies, or for delivery on something more robust than a memory stick, and ask how long they retain a master. And when you do get the files back, get them onto at least two separate places straight away — a single copy of irreplaceable family footage on one small device is the arrangement that produced this.
