Legacy Devices: Why Old Phones Are Easier Than New Ones
His enquiry was a single line covering three devices from a different technological era. "Data to be recovered from a hard drive — from a 20-year-old laptop, which has been removed — and from two old feature-type phones." The drive is straightforward legacy work. The phones are where this case is worth writing down, because they invert what everybody assumes. This archive is full of modern handsets whose data is genuinely unreachable — encrypted storage, keys held in dedicated hardware, no route that does not run through the running phone. Pre-smartphone handsets are frequently the opposite: simpler, unencrypted, and readable in ways their descendants are not. Twenty-year-old phones are often more recoverable than last year's model.

The decode: the drive briefly, then why the phones are the easy part
The laptop drive: a machine of that age uses the wide ribbon-cable interface that modern computers abandoned, so it needs era-appropriate native connection rather than a cheap adapter — those handle power sequencing poorly on exactly the drives that need care. And it has been stationary for years, which makes the first power-up the reading that matters: bearings stiffen and heads can adhere during long storage. It is assessed before it is switched on rather than plugged in to see. Drives of that generation are mechanically simple and low-density, and they usually image quickly and completely once they start.
Why the phones invert expectations: a modern smartphone encrypts its storage with a key derived from the passcode and held in dedicated security hardware, and the storage is soldered in place. The consequence runs through this archive: no passcode, no data, and no chip-level route around it. A feature phone of the pre-smartphone era has none of that. There is generally no full-disk encryption, no secure enclave, and no cryptographic binding between the memory and the rest of the device. The storage is a modest amount of flash, and it can be read directly through service interfaces or, where the handset is dead, at chip level — after which the contents are reconstructed in software like any other flash device. The barrier that makes modern phones hard simply is not there.
What is realistically on them: worth setting expectations. Contacts, text messages, call logs, calendar entries, notes, and photographs at the low resolutions of the period. That is a smaller haul than a modern phone would hold, but for anyone recovering an old handset it is usually exactly the material they want — the messages and the numbers rather than the pictures.
The object people throw away: the SIM card. On phones of that era, contacts and often messages were stored on the SIM rather than in the handset, because handset memory was scarce. A SIM is a separate readable object, it survives the phone being dead, and it is frequently the quickest route to exactly what someone is looking for. Both SIMs should be kept with their handsets and mentioned when the devices are sent.
What not to do: not charge them for long, and not attempt to power them repeatedly. Batteries of that age can swell, and a swollen cell should not be charged or pressed.

Recovering from devices from twenty years ago
