Clicking Drive With a Blinking Light

His enquiry paired two observations that pull in opposite directions and are both correct. A 1TB WD My Passport holding around 500GB of pictures and videos: "it is clicking when I connect it to the computer. The LED blinks and it turns on." The working light is genuinely reassuring about one thing and irrelevant to another, and separating them is the whole diagnosis. But there is a second distinction worth drawing while we are here, because these two sounds get used interchangeably and mean entirely different faults: a click and a beep are not the same, they come from different components, and they carry different levels of urgency.

The decode: what the light proves, and click versus beep

What the light actually tells him: that the enclosure works. A portable drive is two devices in one case — a bridge board that takes power and converts the drive's native connection to USB, and the drive behind it. The indicator belongs to the enclosure. Its blinking normally confirms power delivery, the bridge board and the cable, which usefully eliminates the whole family of connection faults. It says nothing whatever about the drive, which is where his clicking is coming from. So the light is real reassurance about the wrong half.

Click versus beep, since both get reported as noise: a beep is the spindle motor straining against a platter stack that will not turn — heads adhered to a surface, or a stiffened bearing. Why that makes clicking urgent: every cycle is a possibly-damaged head assembly travelling over the platters. The number of times a clicking drive is powered is therefore one of the largest determinants of what comes back — and it is the only variable still under his control. The instruction is firm: stop connecting it, including to try another cable or another computer, both of which produce the same click.
