Why Wiggling the Cable Is the Wrong Test

His enquiry included a self-diagnosis that is often correct and an instinct that goes with it and should be resisted. A Seagate external drive that is "no longer being recognised when plugged in to either my desktop or laptop, and appears to have a faulty or loose connection." He asked to be contacted by email and offered to bring it in. His reading is plausible — connection faults are among the commonest things that kill external drives, and they are also among the most repairable. But the way almost everybody tests for one is the single most damaging thing they could do, and it is worth saying before he tries it again.

The decode: what a loose connection is, and why wiggling is destructive

What is usually loose: not the cable. On an external drive the connector is soldered to a small circuit board inside the case, and the joints holding it there take the strain of every insertion, every tug on the cable and every knock while plugged in. Those joints crack. The result is a drive that works sometimes, works when held at a particular angle, or stops working altogether — and the fault is inside the case rather than in the lead. Replacing the cable, which is what everyone tries first, changes nothing because the cable was never the problem.

Why wiggling is worse than not testing: the point of this page. When somebody moves the cable to find a position where the drive appears, three things happen. The cracked joint is flexed further, extending the crack and turning an intermittent contact into a permanent break. Worse, if contact is briefly made and lost while the drive is powered and spinning, the drive loses power mid-operation — repeatedly. Abrupt power loss during a write corrupts filing structures; abrupt power loss during a read can leave the heads unparked. And every reconnection spins the drive up again, which is the most demanding thing it does. So the test that feels like careful investigation is actually a sequence of power cuts to a running drive with a failing connector.

The safe test, which is short: connect it once, on a different computer, with a different cable, and observe. If it does not appear, stop. That is the whole of what home testing can establish, and he has already done it on two machines. What must not follow is holding, propping, angling or wiggling to coax it into life.

Why the outlook is good if he is right: a connector fault is one of the more repairable things in this trade. The board is inspected under magnification, the cracked joints and any torn traces identified, and the footprint reconstructed — after which the drive is read normally through its own electronics. The data behind it is entirely untouched, because nothing about a broken connection damages what is written on the platters.

One caution about opening the case: the instinct to shuck the drive and connect it directly is understandable and, on many portable drives, wrong — the USB connector is on the drive's own board rather than a separate bridge, and that board frequently holds the encryption. Removing it and connecting the bare disk returns unreadable data.

On the bench

The drive was not powered repeatedly, and no attempt was made to find a position in which it worked. The board was inspected under magnification with the connector joints examined specifically — cracked solder, lifted pads and torn traces being the ordinary findings — and the footprint reconstructed where required, deliberately restoring the drive's own connection rather than bypassing it, so that any encryption tied to that board remained intact. Once contact was restored the drive was read on native equipment and imaged completely on first successful access, since a freshly reconstructed footprint earns no second chances.

The outcome

The connector joints identified and rebuilt, the drive read through its own electronics and the contents imaged and verified. Free assessment, one fixed written figure including VAT; where a drive has to be opened, 50% of parts and labour is payable upfront with the balance only on success — otherwise no recovery, no fee.
