A New Card That Failed Within Hours

Her enquiry described the worst possible day for this to happen and a card that had done nothing to deserve suspicion. "SD card with wedding ceremony photos. Brand new card, formatted in camera first, but after a few hours the camera said it was 'corrupt' and to reformat. I did not reformat, but did a checkdisk command and tried multiple data recovery software deep scans. The file system shows as raw." She got the most important decision right — she refused the reformat — and then made a smaller one that is worth explaining, because it is the commonest well-intentioned mistake in this archive. And the card being new is not the reassurance it seems.

The decode: why new cards fail, and what the disk check did

Why being new offers no protection: flash devices fail on a bathtub curve — a cluster of failures very early in life, a long reliable middle, and rising failures at the end. Early-life failures come from manufacturing defects that only appear under real use, and they are why a card can be perfect in the shop and fail on its first serious outing. There is also a counterfeit problem: cards sold as premium branded stock are sometimes relabelled lower-grade parts, which behave normally until pushed. Either way, a new card carries a meaningfully higher risk than a card that has already worked reliably for a year — the opposite of most people's assumption, and the reason professionals do not put a brand-new card into a job that cannot be reshot.

What "RAW" means: the filesystem structures cannot be read. The card itself is responding — it powered, identified itself and reported its capacity, which is why a computer can describe it at all. Only the layer describing how the space is organised has become unreadable. Her photographs are physically present behind it.

What the disk check did, said plainly and without reproach: the check-disk command is a repair tool, and repair means writing. It examines filing structures, decides which records to trust where they disagree, discards what it cannot reconcile, and writes its corrections back to the device. On a card whose structures are already damaged, that can overwrite exactly the records a reconstruction rebuilds from, and it can move recovered fragments into folders with generic names, stripping the original filenames. It is presented everywhere as the sensible first step, and on a device holding irreplaceable images it is the opposite. Deep scans are gentler — most only read — but each one is a full pass over a card that has already shown it is unwell.

Why the outlook is still good: she declined the reformat, which is the single most destructive option and the one the camera actively recommended. Wedding photographs are large files with strong internal signatures, and a card whose content is intact behind an unreadable filesystem is among the most recoverable situations there is — with reconstruction attempted first so folders and filenames come back, and carving as the fallback.

The practical lesson: new cards belong in low-stakes use first, and a wedding wants cards with a history — plus, where the camera supports it, a second slot writing a simultaneous copy.
