An Old Card and What a Decade Does
Her enquiry was modest about its own prospects. A microSD card "not being recognised by any device I connected it to. It used to be used inside a mobile phone, however it is at least 10 years old. I believe there are photos on it and maybe videos. Please could you email me to let me know how much this would cost, or if it is even achievable to recover files." The decode: the silence, then the decade
What non-recognition everywhere means: a host applies power to a card and waits for it to identify itself, and only after that handshake does anything else happen. A card that produces no response on any device never completed that first exchange — which places the fault at the controller, the chip conducting the introduction, rather than at the memory holding her photographs. What ten years unpowered actually does: the honest part. Flash stores data as trapped electrical charge, and that charge leaks very slowly, faster when warm.
