Reformatted the Wrong Card

Her enquiry was self-deprecating about a mistake and entirely sound about everything after it. "I accidentally reformatted — I know, brain fail, picked up the wrong card — my SD card containing lots of footage for my work. I went to the reformat card option on my camera. Do I have to reshoot, or can you retrieve the files? A quick search reveals software which claims to do this, but I don't want to risk it." The answer to her question is probably not, and probably yes — she almost certainly does not have to reshoot. And the two decisions she made after the mistake matter more than the mistake did: she stopped using the card, and she found the software and declined to run it. Both were right, and the second one is the harder call.

The decode: what the format did, and why her restraint mattered

What an in-camera format actually does: far less than the word suggests. A camera formatting a card performs a quick format — it writes a fresh, empty filing structure and marks the whole data area as available. It does not erase the contents. Every frame of her footage remains physically written exactly where it was, unlisted rather than deleted. That is why a formatted card that has been left alone is one of the most recoverable situations in this archive, and it is why the answer to "do I have to reshoot" is very probably no.

Why video is the good case: the material helps her. Video files are large, written in long contiguous runs and carry strong internal signatures at their start, so surviving footage is identified directly by its own structure and reassembled without any catalogue at all. Filenames will not come back — those lived in the structure the format cleared — but the clips themselves generally will, ordered by the capture times recorded inside them.

Why not running the software was the right call: and this deserves the most space, because it is the decision most people get wrong under pressure. Consumer recovery tools vary enormously, and the risks are specific. Some write to the card — installing themselves onto it, or saving recovered output back to the same device, which overwrites the very footage being recovered. Many carve blindly rather than attempting proper reconstruction, producing type-sorted folders of unnamed fragments. And on video in particular, tools that cannot determine where a clip ends produce files of plausible size that will not play. Once any of that has happened, a proper recovery starts from a worse position. Her instinct — I don't want to risk it — is exactly the judgement this archive would ask for.

What decides the outcome now: one thing only. Whether anything is written to the card. It must not go back in the camera, because a single new clip lands in space the camera now believes is free and physically replaces what was there. Out of the camera, and stays out.

What the deliverable should look like: clips validated by playing them rather than by file count, ordered by their embedded capture times so she can reconstruct the shoot, and any losses reported by position rather than summarised.

Formatted a card by mistake

Take the card out of the camera and leave it out — that single action preserves nearly everything. An in-camera format is a quick format: it writes a fresh empty index and marks the space as available, but it doesn't erase your footage, which is still physically on the card. What destroys it is what you record next, because new clips land in exactly the space the camera now thinks is free. So don't put it back to check, and don't shoot on it. Resist the recovery software too, however plausible it looks. Some tools install onto the card or save their output back to it, overwriting the very files you're trying to save; many carve blindly and return unnamed fragments instead of your clips; and on video they frequently produce files of the right size that won't play. You probably don't need to reshoot — but only if nothing writes to that card.
