SD Card Damaged Casing: the Shell and the Die
His enquiry was practical and had a kind motive behind it. "I have an SD card that is not being recognised after damage to the casing. The card contained photos from a holiday. Would love to recover them as a surprise for my wife if at all possible — she was very upset when they were lost. What would you charge for a successful recovery?" The phrase worth unpacking is damage to the casing, because it carries an assumption that does not hold for memory cards. On a hard drive the casing is a container and the mechanism is inside it. On a memory card there is no such separation: the casing is the card — a single moulded block with the memory, the controller and the wiring set into it. So damage to the outside is damage to the thing itself, and the question that decides everything is how deep it went.

The decode: why the shell is the card, and what decides the answer
How a card is built: not as components inside a housing but as a monolith — the memory die and the controller embedded in resin, with fine internal traces running out to the gold contacts at the edge. There is no slack, no internal space and nothing rattling about. Which means physical damage does not simply break a lid; it goes into the structure. A crack, a bend or a crushing force severs the microscopic traces carrying data between the memory and the contacts, and the card stops being recognised because its wiring has been cut — not because its contents have gone.
The question that decides the outcome: whether the damage reached the memory die. That die is a small, robust piece of silicon occupying a fraction of the card's area, and it is where the photographs physically live. Damage confined to the interconnect — the traces, the contacts, the resin around them — leaves it entirely intact, and the recovery is a matter of reaching it another way. Damage through the die itself is the honest end of the road. Which applies is established by inspection: the damage path is traced under magnification and checked against the die's position, and that assessment is the first thing done.
How the memory is reached when the wiring is cut: not by repairing the card. Manufacturers leave internal technological pads beneath the surface, behind the damaged traces, which speak the memory's raw protocol directly. The die is read through those, and the raw data is then descrambled, error-corrected and reassembled through its translation layer until a filesystem stands up. The severed traces and the broken contacts take no part in the process.
The one thing that makes it worse: inserting it again. Every insertion applies force across exactly the damaged span, and the risk is extending a crack from the interconnect into the die — turning the recoverable case into the unrecoverable one. A damaged card should be handled flat, kept still, and not tried in another reader to see whether it works this time.
His pricing question, answered plainly: the assessment is free and establishes whether the die survived — which is the fact that determines whether a recovery is possible at all. Where it is, one fixed figure including VAT is issued in writing before any work; because this route requires the chip to be reached, 50% of parts and labour is payable upfront with the balance due only on successful recovery.
