The Light That Changed Colour
Her enquiry was brief, precise and included a detail almost nobody thinks to mention. A teacher's 500GB portable drive holding roughly 3GB of documents and presentations: "not showing on my computer — is appearing in Device Manager and the safely remove device menu. Light is not green but blue." Two observations, and the second is the unusual one. Most people describe what their computer is doing. The decode: what each signal means, and why the light matters
What Device Manager listing proves: the enclosure has powered, its bridge chip has enumerated, and the operating system has recognised a device and loaded a driver for it. Appearing in the safe-removal menu confirms the same thing from another angle — the system considers it a removable device it is managing. So the cable, the port, the enclosure board and the power delivery are all working, which eliminates the whole family of connection faults in one observation.
What its absence from the desktop means: the next stage has failed. For a drive to appear as usable storage, the disk behind the bridge must complete its own start-up, report a capacity and respond to being read. Hers does not reach that point. So the fault sits past the enclosure — in the drive itself, not in anything connecting it.
Why the light is worth reporting: many portable drives use their indicator to report state rather than merely to show power — a steady colour for normal operation, a different colour or pattern for activity, standby, or a fault.
