Removing the Blade Yourself: What to Know First

His enquiry offered something most people do not think to offer. A 2015 MacBook Air that has died: "I would like to get the data off the SSD, which I'm happy to remove myself and bring along. Would you be able to do that? How much would that be?" The answer is yes, the offer is welcome, and his machine's year makes this one of the more straightforward cases in this archive. But there are two cautions worth reading before he picks up a screwdriver, and one thing he should not buy on the way — because the most common way this goes wrong is an owner doing everything right and then connecting the module to something that cannot address it.

The decode: why the era helps, the two cautions, and the thing not to buy

Why 2015 is a good year to have: the machine carries a proprietary blade module — solid-state storage on a custom connector — which is removable, and which crucially predates the integrated security chip that later machines use. So the module is not cryptographically bound to the logic board: read elsewhere, it yields readable data rather than ciphertext. Apple's blade modules of this era use a proprietary connector, and the inexpensive adapters sold to convert them vary considerably in which generations they properly support. One can mate physically, deliver power, and still fail to bring the module up — producing silence that owners reasonably read as "the SSD is dead" when it is nothing of the kind. If he is bringing the module in anyway, there is no reason to buy an adapter at all; a generation-matched interface is what it will be read on.

What else to bring: the machine's account password if he has it — rarely the obstacle on this generation, but free to have — and any history worth knowing.
