Broken Backlight, Not a Broken Drive
His enquiry asked for a recovery quotation on a machine that may not need one. A MacBook Pro from early 2011 with "a broken back light. It has been broken for over a year, and I would like a quote for a data recovery from it." The honest answer starts with a correction that could save him the whole cost. A failed backlight is a lighting fault, not a computer fault. The machine underneath it is very probably running perfectly — booting, logging in, and displaying an image that nobody can see because nothing is illuminating it. There is a thirty-second test that proves it, and if it passes, his files are a cable away rather than a recovery away.

The decode: what a backlight is, the torch test, and the real risk
What has actually failed: a laptop screen has two separate parts. The panel forms the image, and the backlight shines through it so the image is visible. They are different components with different failure modes. When the backlight fails — a blown fuse on the board, a failed driver circuit, a broken cable — the panel keeps working perfectly and keeps displaying everything. The machine boots, the login screen appears, the desktop loads. It is all there, in the dark.
The test that proves it: take the machine somewhere dim, switch it on, and shine a bright torch at the screen at a shallow angle. If the image is faintly visible under the torch beam — a login screen, a desktop, a cursor — the panel and the whole computer are working, and only the illumination has gone. That is a thirty-second test costing nothing, and it is the single most useful thing he can do before spending money.
What follows if it passes: he does not need a data recovery. He needs a monitor. A machine of that generation drives an external display through its video output, so connecting one gives him a fully working computer with a visible screen, and he can copy his files off himself in an afternoon. Alternatively — and even more simply — the drive in a 2011 machine is an ordinary removable 2.5-inch drive on a standard connection. It comes out with a screwdriver and reads on any professional interface, which makes copying it the cheapest job in this trade.
The one genuine risk, and it is not the backlight: the year of disuse. A drive that has sat unpowered for a long time faces its most demanding moment at the next spin-up — bearings stiffen and heads can adhere to platters during storage. That is the only part of his situation that warrants care, and it argues for treating the first power-on deliberately rather than casually: if the machine or drive does not behave normally on that first attempt, it should not be retried repeatedly.

On the bench

The display fault distinguished from the machine, the cheap route identified, and specialist work reserved for where it was actually needed. Try the torch test before you spend anything. Take the machine into a dim room, switch it on, wait a minute, and shine a bright torch at the screen at a shallow angle. If you can faintly see a login screen, a desktop or a moving cursor, your computer is working perfectly and only the backlight — the lamp behind the picture — has failed. The panel, the drive and everything else are fine. In that case you don't need a data recovery: connect an external monitor and copy your files off yourself, or take the drive out if the machine is old enough to have a removable one. If the machine has been unused for a long time, treat the first power-up as the moment that matters — have your destination drive connected and ready before you switch it on, copy the irreplaceable things first, and don't retry repeatedly if it misbehaves.
