Told the Data Cannot Be Retrieved: What That Means

Her enquiry carried a verdict and four years of work. A 2019 MacBook that "just wouldn't turn on. Had no previous issues with it. Took it to the Apple shop and they said a part inside needs replacing, and that because it's a 2019 MacBook the data is impossible to retrieve. I'm devastated as I've four years' worth of work on the computer." That verdict contains something true and something overstated, and separating them matters — because the true part is real and the overstated part has cost people their data when they accepted it. It is impossible for Apple. It is not the same as impossible. And there is one thing she must not agree to, because that would make it true.

The decode: what is true, what is overstated, and the thing to refuse

What is true: on a machine of that year the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted with keys held in a dedicated security chip on that same board. There is no drive to remove. Reading the memory packages directly returns ciphertext, because the keys never leave the chip. So the familiar route — take the drive out, read it elsewhere — genuinely does not exist, and anyone who tells her otherwise is wrong.

What is overstated: "impossible" describes Apple's service model rather than the physics. Their repair process replaces assemblies: a faulty board is swapped for a working one. Within that model, a machine whose board has failed is indeed unrecoverable, because they do not repair boards and a replacement board cannot decrypt storage sealed to the original. But board-level repair at component level is a different discipline, and its objective here is narrow: restore enough function for the machine to power up and unlock its own storage against her password, then image immediately. That route exists, it is routinely successful on power-side faults, and it is simply not something a manufacturer's service counter offers.

Where the honest limit really sits: not at "2019". It sits at what has actually failed. A power-delivery fault, a failed rail or a damaged component in the power path is tractable — the storage and the security chip are untouched and the machine can be brought back. If the storage packages themselves or the security chip are damaged, that is genuinely the end, because neither can be substituted: a replacement security chip does not hold her keys. Which of those applies is established by assessment rather than by the machine's year, and "had no previous issues and suddenly wouldn't turn on" leans towards the power side.

The thing she must refuse: the proposed component replacement, if it is the logic board — and on these machines it usually is. Swapping the board discards the security chip holding her keys, and with it the data, permanently. A board replacement is the correct repair if the goal is a working laptop and the data is expendable. It is the one irreversible step if the data is not. She should say clearly that the machine must not be repaired until the data question is settled, and she should not leave it with anyone who has been asked to replace parts.

On the bench

The board was assessed to distinguish the two possibilities that the year alone cannot: a power-side failure, with storage and security chip intact, from damage to the storage packages or the chip itself — because that determination decides whether a recovery exists rather than how difficult it is. Repair proceeded at micro level with the objective of making the machine run and unlock rather than of restoring a fully working laptop, and imaging began immediately on that access, since a board repaired to that standard is a temporary instrument. No board replacement was performed, and the credential question was settled with her before any work.

The outcome

The board restored far enough for the machine to decrypt its own storage, and four years of work imaged and verified. Staged assessment with findings in writing, one fixed written figure including VAT; where a chip has to be removed, 50% of parts and labour is payable upfront with the balance only on success — otherwise no recovery, no fee. The decode, for anyone given that verdict: the true part is that there is no drive to remove and no chip-level route, because storage is soldered and sealed to a security chip; the overstated part is "impossible", which describes a service model that replaces boards rather than repairing them — component-level repair aimed at making the machine unlock itself is a real route they do not offer; the honest limit is what failed rather than the year; and above all, do not agree to a logic board replacement, because that discards the keys and makes the verdict true.

Don't authorise the repair yet. On machines from roughly 2018 onwards the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted with keys held in a security chip on that same board — so replacing the board fixes your laptop and destroys your data permanently, because a new board cannot decrypt storage sealed to the old one. That's the one irreversible step, and it's often exactly what's being proposed. Say clearly that the machine must not be repaired until the data question is settled. Then understand the verdict properly: it's true that there's no drive to remove and no way to read the memory separately, but "impossible" describes a service model that swaps assemblies rather than repairing them.
