A Single-Disk NAS Is Not a Safe Place
His enquiry described a device that most owners assume is inherently safer than it is. A 4TB single-bay network drive that "recently failed, and I need to recover the data which is mainly photos and music saved over the years. The drive is 4TB, but less than half of that is used so far." The word NAS carries an implication of resilience — it looks like infrastructure, it sits on the network, it has an appliance's confidence about it. But a one-bay unit contains exactly one hard drive with no redundancy of any kind. It is an external drive with an ethernet port, and it fails the way any single drive fails.

The decode: what a one-bay unit actually is, and where the fault may be
Why the assumption forms: network storage is marketed alongside multi-bay units that genuinely do provide redundancy, and the category name is shared. People buy a NAS to get their photographs "off the computer and somewhere safe", and the device's appearance — a permanent box on the network, always on, with its own interface — reinforces the impression. But redundancy comes from having more than one disk with the data on both. A single-bay unit has one disk, so it offers convenience and access, not protection. When it fails, everything on it is as unavailable as anything on any failed drive.
Where the fault most often is, and this is the hopeful part: on consumer network appliances the external power supply fails more often than anything inside. After that, the appliance's own circuit board. Only after those is the drive itself implicated — and in both of the first two cases the drive is perfectly healthy and the data is entirely intact. So "the NAS has failed" very frequently means "the unit needs a power supply", and establishing that costs nothing and should be the first thing done.
What the drive inside actually is: an ordinary hard drive carrying a Linux filesystem. The appliance being dead, discontinued or unsupported changes nothing about the platters. The drive comes out and is read directly. There is one trap that goes with it, and it catches people who get that far: connect the drive to a Windows machine and it will show as unformatted and offer to initialise it, because Windows cannot read the filesystem. Accepting that destroys the partition structures on a drive that was perfectly fine.
Why half-full matters practically: less data to image and a shorter, safer capture — and delivery media should still be sized generously, since a recovery can yield more than the original appeared to hold once earlier versions and deleted material surface.
The thing to change afterwards: said plainly because it is the point of the page. Photographs and music accumulated over years want a second copy somewhere the first copy is not — another drive, an off-site service, or both. A multi-bay unit with redundancy protects against a disk failing but still does not protect against deletion, theft, fire or a failed appliance. The rule that survives all of it is simply more than one copy, in more than one place.
On the bench
The cheapest possibilities were eliminated first, since a unit that has failed for want of a power supply should not be quoted as a recovery: the external power supply and the appliance's own electronics were tested before the drive was implicated at all. Where those proved sound, the drive was removed and read write-blocked on native equipment, taking the dead appliance out of the question entirely, and its Linux filesystem interpreted directly rather than through any host that would have offered to initialise it. Contents were verified and delivered on cross-platform media.

That's a free check worth doing before anything else, though make sure any replacement adapter matches the voltage, polarity and current rating exactly, because the wrong one can damage a healthy drive. If the drive does have to come out, be careful what you connect it to: NAS drives carry a Linux filesystem, so a Windows machine will show it as unformatted and offer to initialise it, which destroys the structures on a perfectly good disk. And afterwards, understand what you had — a one-bay unit is an external drive with a network port rather than a redundant system, so get a second copy somewhere else.
