Only Recognised When Lifted Up

His enquiry contained a detail so specific it is nearly a complete diagnosis. An external drive "no longer being recognised by the laptop. For some time now, it was only being recognised when the hard drive was lifted up." He would like the data moved to a new drive. That sentence describes something with a narrow set of causes: position-dependent recognition means a physical connection that is broken but occasionally touching, with gravity or flex momentarily closing it. It also, unfortunately, describes exactly how the fault got worse — because a drive that works when lifted invites being lifted, and every session of that flexed the thing that was already cracked.

The decode: what position dependence proves, and why it degrades

Why position matters at all: electrical contact is binary — either the circuit is complete or it is not. A drive that behaves differently when moved is telling you that a connection somewhere is physically separated and that changing the geometry brings the two sides close enough to touch. Gravity, the weight of the cable, and the flex of the case are all enough to do that when a solder joint has cracked but not fully parted. So his observation is not a quirk: it locates the fault at a mechanical connection rather than anywhere in the drive's electronics or its data.

Where it usually is: the solder joints holding the USB connector to the drive's internal board, which take the strain of every insertion and every knock while plugged in.
