New Drive Beeping While Still Recognised

Her enquiry contained an apparent contradiction that is not one, and it is the key to the whole case. A 2TB Seagate external drive only a few months old: "recently when I used it to put more photos on, the files were no longer detectable — although the drive is recognised by the laptop, as there is an option to eject it. The decode: which component is talking, and why the copy triggered it

What is recognised, and what is beeping: an external drive is two devices in one case. There is the bridge board — a small circuit board that takes power and converts the drive's native connection to USB — and there is the drive itself. The bridge is what introduces itself to the laptop, which is why an eject option appears: the computer has registered a device. The drive behind it is a separate matter, and the beeping is coming from there. So her two observations are not in tension; the enclosure is announcing itself while the disk behind it never reaches a usable state. That is why she sees a device to eject and no files inside it.

What the beep actually is: a hard drive has no speaker. The tone is the spindle motor straining against a platter stack that will not turn freely, made audible as it repeatedly attempts to start. The usual causes are heads that have come to rest on a platter surface and adhered there, or a spindle bearing that has stiffened. Both prevent rotation, and without rotation nothing else in the start-up sequence can happen — so the drive never identifies itself, never reports a capacity, and never presents its files.

Why it failed while she was copying photographs: the timing is not coincidence. Copying is the most demanding thing most people ask of a drive — sustained writing over a prolonged period, with the mechanism working continuously rather than idling. A drive with a marginal component will often cope perfectly with light use and fail under exactly that load. The copy did not break a healthy drive; it asked more of it than anything previously had.

What "a few months old" changes: the commercial part, and it matters.
