The decode: why it got worse, and what a console drive holds
Why falling while in use is the serious case: a drive that is switched off has its heads parked — retracted off the data surfaces onto a ramp at the edge — and a fall in that state often does no data damage at all. A running drive has its heads flying nanometres above platters turning at thousands of revolutions per minute, and an impact can drive them into the surface.
