It Was Recognised Once and Not Since

I plugged it into another port and it started making a beeping and jolting sound. After that it wasn't being recognised, so I opened Disk Utility to mount it manually and it wasn't even detected. The blue light stopped working, but when connected it powers up — you can hear the platter moving inside. It was recognised once" and not since. The decode: what beeping and jolting mean, and what the one detection was
What the sounds describe: a drive has no speaker, so a beep is the spindle motor straining against a platter stack that will not turn freely — heads adhered to a surface, or a stiffened bearing. The jolting he felt is the same event as a physical sensation: the motor applying torque, failing to rotate, and releasing. Nothing after spin-up can happen while that is the case, which is why the system stopped seeing it.
What the single later detection means: that the resistance is marginal rather than absolute. On one attempt the motor overcame it, the drive spun, completed its readiness sequence and presented itself. That is genuinely informative: a drive that is completely seized never appears at all. It also means the data is sitting behind a mechanism that can still, occasionally, run.
Why that is a window rather than good news: the point of this page. Each attempt to start a drive in this state is the motor straining at maximum current against a physical restriction, and where heads are adhered to a platter, the motor is trying to drag them across the surface. That is precisely the mechanism by which a recoverable fault becomes an unrecoverable one — scored tracks are destroyed permanently. So the appearances become rarer not by coincidence but because each attempt makes the next less likely. His sequence, from working to intermittent to nothing across a few hours, is that process happening in real time.
What the light stopping means: less than it seems. The indicator belongs to the enclosure and its behaviour follows the enclosure's own logic; it is not a verdict on the drive. That he can still hear the platter moving is the more meaningful observation, and it belongs to the drive.
What should have happened at the one detection, and what applies to anyone reading this in that moment: if a failing drive appears even once, that is the moment to copy — immediately, in priority order, with the destination already connected, and without browsing or tidying. Not to run a repair, not to check whether it stays, and not to eject and try again. A drive that has shown itself once may not do so twice, and the material copied in those minutes is frequently all that is recovered without intervention.
What to do now: stop connecting it. The elimination is complete, the drive is deteriorating with each attempt, and the only variable still under his control is how many more times it is asked to try.
