Clone It Before It Finishes Failing
His enquiry asked for something slightly different from most, and the instinct behind it is exactly right. A WD hard drive: "I believe the partition is failing. Each folder and file takes about 7 minutes to open, but the hard drive is still readable. Before the hard drive completely fails, I need to clone it onto a new hard drive. There is about 900GB of data — image files, documents and presentations. Would you be able to quote me on this basis?" He has recognised that he is in a window and wants to use it, which is what a bench does and what most people never think to do. Two refinements though. His diagnosis is probably wrong in a way that matters. And a consumer cloning tool will almost certainly make things worse rather than saving him.

The decode: what seven minutes means, and why a clone tool fails
Why it is not the partition: a damaged partition structure produces a drive that will not mount, shows as unallocated, or demands formatting. It does not produce a drive that works correctly but slowly. Seven minutes to open a single folder is a drive spending almost all of its time retrying reads — asking the same sectors repeatedly until something succeeds or the request gives up. That is media degradation or a struggling mechanism, one layer below where he has been looking. The distinction matters because it changes the urgency: a partition problem is stable and can wait, while a drive retrying itself into the ground is consuming its remaining margin every minute it is powered.
Why his instinct is right: a drive that still reads is a drive whose data can still be captured, and capturing it while that is true is the entire game. Waiting for a convenient moment is how windows close. He is doing the correct thing.
Why a consumer cloning tool will not do it: and this is the refinement that saves the job. Cloning software written for healthy drives has one behaviour when it meets a sector that will not read: it waits, and then it retries, and it has no facility to give up quickly and come back later. On a drive where every read is already taking seconds, that produces a clone that runs for days, stalls indefinitely on the first genuinely bad region, and — worst of all — spends the drive's remaining life hammering its weakest areas while copying nothing useful. Many such tools also abort entirely on error, leaving a partial copy with no record of what was missed. So the right instinct with the wrong tool typically ends with a drive that has been finished off and no usable copy.
What imaging does differently: three things. Per-sector timeouts, so a failing sector is given a strict budget and deferred rather than retried until something breaks. Sequencing, so the healthy expanse is captured first at full speed while the drive is at its strongest, and difficult regions are revisited afterwards on their own terms. And priority ordering, which is where his file list becomes useful — on a drive with limited margin, the material that matters most should be captured first rather than alphabetically.
What to do right now: stop using it. Every folder he opens is seven minutes of retries on a drive with a finite budget, and browsing to see what is still there is the most expensive way to spend it.
On the bench
The drive was assessed on the Atola Insight Forensic first, which established whether the degradation was localised or general — the difference between a bounded problem and a drive in decline, and the thing that determines how much margin is left to spend. Imaging then ran on the PC-3000 Express under Data Extractor with per-sector timeouts enforced, the healthy expanse captured first at full speed, and the weak neighbourhoods deferred to later patient passes. The sweep was sequenced by his own priority rather than by disk order, so the material he named came off first. The completed image was verified and written to new media.

Drive that still works but has slowed to a crawl
You're in a window, so treat it as one — but don't spend it browsing. Every folder you open on a drive taking minutes per file is a long session of retries, and that consumes the margin you need. Recognise what the slowness means: a damaged partition makes a drive unmountable or shows it as unallocated, it doesn't make a working drive slow. Minutes per file is the drive retrying reads, which is media or mechanical degradation and a live clock. If you're copying yourself, work in strict priority order — the irreplaceable things first, largest value first — rather than by folder or alphabetically, and accept that you may not get everything. Be wary of consumer cloning and imaging tools: they have no way to abandon a bad sector and return to it, so they stall for hours on the first bad region and often abort with a partial copy and no list of what they missed.
