A Clunk on Every Restart

His enquiry was four lines and the sound he chose is the informative part. A 2TB Seagate internal drive, six years old: "Just stopped working. Strange 'clunk' on any re-start of the computer. Not even detected by Windows now." People reach for click, beep and grind, and each points somewhere different. A clunk — a single, dull, low sound occurring once per start-up rather than repeating — describes something quite specific: a mechanism attempting one decisive movement and either failing it or completing it badly. It is not the rhythmic repetition of a head assembly retrying, and it is not the continuous strain of a motor that cannot turn.

The decode: what a single clunk is, and why it repeats only once

What happens at start-up: a drive at rest has its heads parked off the platters, held on a ramp at the outer edge. When power arrives, the platters spin up and then the heads are unloaded from that ramp onto the disk surfaces — a single, decisive movement of the actuator, performed once. If it succeeds, calibration follows silently and the drive becomes ready.

Why the sound occurs once: because that movement happens once. A drive that clicks repeatedly is one where the head assembly is seeking, failing and retrying — many small movements. A drive that clunks once per start-up is one where the single unload movement is going wrong: the actuator slamming to a stop, the heads coming off the ramp badly, or the assembly moving further than it should because it has been damaged or has lost its damping. After that one event the drive does not retry the same way, which is why he hears it once rather than continuously.

What that points at: the head assembly and its parking mechanism rather than the motor or the surfaces. Six years of service is unremarkable for a drive and unremarkable for this fault — actuator components, the ramp, and the fine suspensions holding the heads all wear, and the load-unload cycle is performed every time the machine starts or the drive idles down. It is a mechanical wear failure rather than an event.

Why it is not detected: if the heads have not loaded correctly, calibration cannot happen, the reserved firmware region cannot be read, and the drive never reports a capacity. So the operating system sees nothing — not because the drive is dead, but because it never completes the sequence that would let it announce itself.

Why repeated restarts are the risk: each one performs that same failed movement again, with heads that may be damaged or misaligned, over the surfaces holding his data. A single bad unload can place a head on the platter in a way that scores it, and repeating the attempt is repeating the risk. The drive should come out of the machine and stay out, which is the one thing entirely within his control.

Why the outlook is generally good: head assembly and ramp faults are serviceable with matched donor parts, and unless the failed unloads have scored the surfaces, the data underneath is untouched. The inspection establishes which, before anything is powered.

On the bench

The drive was not powered again, since a single clunk per start is a mechanism failing a decisive movement rather than a fault to be reproduced. It was opened under the laminar flow bench and inspected before anything was switched on — the head assembly, the ramp and the parking mechanism examined together, and the platter surfaces checked for the marks a bad unload leaves.
