When the Machine and Its Backup Fail at Once
His enquiry described the scenario every backup regime exists to prevent, and which occasionally happens anyway. An iMac that "got stuck installing the new operating system and no longer recognised its own hard drive when I went into safe mode. Worse still, when I attached my backup appliance to try and do a restore, I discovered it had a flashing amber light and was malfunctioning." The decode: why both failed now, and which to do first
Why the upgrade found the fault: not coincidence. Installing a major operating system update is one of the most write-intensive things a machine ever does — reading and rewriting large parts of the system volume, verifying as it goes, over an extended period. A drive with marginal regions can serve ordinary use for months and fail under exactly that sustained load. Read on a bench rather than through the appliance, that container is opened and its contents extracted directly — including the historical versions the appliance kept, which is often more than the most recent state.
