2014 MacBook Pro: Why the Generation Sets the Price

Her enquiry was two lines and asked the only question she needed answered. "I have a MacBook Pro from 2014 and it has completely broken. I was wondering how much data recovery would be." No symptoms, no history, and none required — because on a Mac the single most useful fact for pricing is not what has failed but which year it was made. Apple's storage architecture changed twice in ways that transformed what a recovery involves, and a machine's generation moves the figure far more than the severity of its fault does. Hers is from the era that makes this straightforward, and knowing that is worth more to her than any diagnosis.

The decode: three eras, and where hers sits

The era before hers: Macs up to around 2012 contain an ordinary removable 2.5-inch drive on a standard connection. It comes out with a screwdriver and reads on any professional interface. The cheapest configuration to recover from, and the machine's condition is almost irrelevant.

Her era: from roughly 2013 to 2017, Apple used a proprietary blade module — solid-state storage on a custom connector. It is still removable, which is the fact that matters. It lifts out of the chassis and is read on a generation-matched interface, so a machine that is dead in every other respect stops being relevant. Crucially, this era also predates the integrated security chip, so the storage is not cryptographically bound to the logic board — a module read elsewhere yields readable data rather than ciphertext. That combination puts her firmly at the affordable end.

The era after hers: from around 2018 onwards, storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted with keys held in a dedicated security chip. There is nothing to remove, reading the memory packages directly returns ciphertext, and the only route is repairing the board until the machine will run and unlock its own storage — specialist electronics work with honest variability. That is a fundamentally different job at a fundamentally different price.

Why this answers her question: because "completely broken" spans everything from a failed power supply to a destroyed logic board, and on her generation almost none of it matters. The module comes out regardless of what killed the machine. The only circumstance that changes the picture is the module itself having failed, which is established by a free assessment rather than assumed. So the honest answer to how much is: an indicative range for a straightforward module read, with the binding figure following a free assessment — and a reasonable expectation of the lower end rather than the higher.

The one thing worth doing before sending it: nothing at all. There is no useful home test, and repeatedly trying to start a broken machine achieves nothing. If she can find her account credentials that is worth having, but on this generation it is rarely the obstacle it becomes on later ones.

On the bench

The machine's generation was confirmed first, since it determines both the route and the figure. The blade module was extracted from the chassis — the last thing the broken machine was needed for — and brought up on a generation-matched proprietary interface through the Atola Insight Forensic's Apple support rather than a general-purpose adapter, which on proprietary modules is the difference between reading a drive and failing to address it. A complete image was taken in that first session on the standing rule for proprietary modules, the volume was verified from the copy, and her files were delivered on fresh media with the machine returned.

The outcome

The module read on a generation-native interface, imaged and the contents verified and delivered. Free assessment, one fixed written figure including VAT; where a drive has to be opened or a chip removed, 50% of parts and labour is payable upfront with the balance only on success — otherwise no recovery, no fee. Pricing a data recovery on a broken Mac

Find out what year your machine is before anything else — it tells you more about the likely cost than the fault does. Models up to around 2012 have an ordinary removable drive; those from roughly 2013 to 2017 have a proprietary but still removable module that isn't cryptographically tied to the logic board; and from about 2018 onwards storage is soldered to the board and encrypted with keys held in a security chip on it. In the first two cases the storage lifts out and reads on separate equipment, so whatever killed the machine stops mattering and you're at the cheaper end. In the third, the board is the only route to its own data and the work is specialist electronics repair. Don't pay to diagnose or repair the machine before recovering the data, don't keep trying to start it, and on later models have your account password ready, because without it even a perfect repair yields nothing.
